Department of Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Studies: Where Hands-On Experience Prepares You for Real-World Success

Our programs and research opportunities bridge science and engineering with a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Biomedical engineers apply engineering design and analysis techniques to problems at the interface between physical and biological systems, developing devices, software systems and technological solutions that directly impact human health and quality of life.

Throughout your education you will develop solutions to pressing problems where biology meets engineering, like developing a prosthetic limb capable of adjusting to a patient’s level of fatigue or ensuring the safety and efficacy of new biomedical devices.

Our small classes also mean more opportunities for you and your classmates to explore interesting questions and to consult one-on-one with your professors.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering as well as a minor in biomedical engineering.

Pre-Health Clubs and Organizations

The Schaefer School of Engineering and Science offers key resources for students interested in a career in medicine, including numerous student organizations that provide invaluable support to assist them in taking practical, actionable steps toward the future they envision. Extracurricular Professional Development

Students in the department have a wealth of opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities, like volunteering at the Hoboken University Medical Center or working as a medical scribe. Some students choose to pursue becoming emergency medical technicians (EMTs), preparing them for direct emergency experience while still undergraduates.

Senior Design

In Senior Design, the engineering capstone course, you'll work on a year-long collaborative project with a team of three to five students and professional industry mentors to develop innovative design solutions for imaging technology, clinical device and tissue engineering projects.

Internships Provide Real-World Experience

Department undergraduates can gain real-world experience through a unique collaboration between Stevens and the Jersey City Medical Center: a month-long internship that allows undergraduates interested in medicine to shadow medical professionals across the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health — from labor and delivery to outpatient screenings.

Engineering Cooperative Education

Approximately 30% of undergraduate engineering students participate in the Stevens Cooperative Education Program, designed to provide you with real-world experiences that prepare you to connect your academic studies with on-the-job experience, explore career interests and clarify goals. You'll alternate between semesters of full-time work and full-time study in areas related to your academic major and career goals.

Your Future, Faster: The Accelerated Master's Program

Stevens' Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) enables currently enrolled students to apply credits from your undergraduate coursework toward a master’s degree, allowing you to earn your bachelor's and master's degrees in just five years.
