Learn how biological systems operate and how to engineer changes in those systems at the university that was a pioneer in the field of chemical biology.

Chemical biology is an exciting field at the very core of biotechnology and the foundation of modern medicine. As the physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and researchers of tomorrow, chemical biologists study disease and develop drugs to help people live longer, healthier lives.

Established in 1978, the chemical biology bachelor’s program was the first undergraduate program of its kind. The program is a complete education in chemistry to ensure a solid foundation in quantitative physical sciences. It also includes a set of biology courses that introduce the key elements of cellular, molecular, and physiological biology.

Our department is led by faculty with valuable industry experience. Our programs’ three  distinguishing features – a research-focused core curriculum, technology emphasis, and contemporary societal context – provide the skills necessary to successfully complete research projects as well as define your career path. The program is excellent preparation to pursue a career in healthcare and satisfies requirements for admission to professional schools of medicine, dentistry and additional healthcare programs. Through the accelerated master’s program, you can earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years.

The chemical biology bachelor's degree can be certified in chemistry by the American Chemical Society (ACS) if CH 412 Inorganic Chemistry is taken as a general or technical elective during the program.
