Graduate Cooperative Education Program at the Schaefer School

The Graduate Cooperative Education Program combines classroom study with periods of paid professional employment directly related to your area of study, research interests, and career goals.

In the graduate co-op program, you'll apply and learn new scientific, engineering, and business approaches and help your sponsoring organization achieve its short-term objectives. Available with two tracks, your co-op experience can serve as a starting point for a research project or augment your on-campus research with complimentary experience.

Graduate Co-op Program Details

  • Available to both domestic and international students. 

  • Start on your co-op assignment after the end of your first semester.

  • At least one work assignment per candidate. Additional work assignments can be allowed with special permission. If you receive permission for additional work assignments, you must complete a semester of full-time study between work assignments. 

  • Meet with a representative from the Office of Graduate Academics and Student Success as well as a career counselor in the Career Center prior to the start of your work assignment.

  • Completion of a mid-term and a final report detailing your co-op project and experience.

Track 1: Co-Op for Experiential Learning

You'll take one period (four to seven months) away from coursework, full-time, to gain practical experience in your major field of study. This experience does not need to be coordinated with the your research thesis or project.

Collaborate with Stevens researchers

Track 2: Co-Op Integrated with Thesis or Project

You and your faculty advisor work with a sponsoring organization on a project that complements the your thesis or research project. You'll continue a research relationship with the organization when you return to campus and until you graduate from the program.

Eligibility and Qualifications

To qualify for participation in the Graduate Cooperative Education Program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled at Stevens Institute of Technology full-time

  • Complete at least one graduate semester at Stevens Institute of Technology 

  • Meet all ELC requirements: TOEFL Score of 85+ 

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0+

  • Have no disciplinary or academic probation issues

  • Have a valid I-20/DS-2019 (international students only)

  • Meet with a career counselor in the Career Center

  • Complete the Graduate Cooperative Education application

Each department within the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science may have additional eligibility and qualifications. You should inquire with the department about additional eligibility and qualifications.
