Civic Engagement

Civic Engagement & Community Service Initiatives

The Office of Undergraduate Student Life at Stevens is committed to the mission of enriching learning by preparing students to be active global citizens by engaging them in meaningful service activities that enhance the quality of life for the local, national, and international communities, in addition to the impact that it has on them. We facilitate opportunities for students to foster, support, and sustain better relationships among community members encouraging and supporting students to become active, responsible, and just members of the community and neighborhoods in which they live. Below you will find helpful links, service organizations, and our annual service events.

For questions or inquiries, or list your service opportunity on Stevens Serves, please contact the Tara Roach, Leadership & Service Coordinator, at troach@stevens.edu.

Service Organizations

Featured Events and Programs

Stevens is proud to host a number of annual service and philanthropic events. These are a few featured programs that our community members participate in.

Ducks 4 Democracy

Ducks 4 Democracy Initiative

Ducks 4 Democracy is a program series to encourage Stevens Ducks to be civically engaged, register to vote, get educated about the issues, and cast your ballot on Election Day. The initiative is an all-campus program where any student, faculty, or staff member can join in this effort. Proposals and ideas for civic engagement can be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Student LIfe at student_life@stevens.edu.

Alternative Spring Break

Alternative Spring Break

These week-long service trips are available to students over extended break periods. During spring break each year, a group of our students engage in a Habitat for Humanity build somewhere within the United States in an area in need of service. This trip enables students to dedicate their break to making a difference, while learning about themselves, their classmates, and the pressing needs of our communities within the country.

First Year Service Day

First Year Service Day

Over 100 new students engage in a half-day community service opportunity serving one of our many Hoboken partners. This gives our newest students a taste of what it is like to be a Stevens student!

THRIVE Service Fair

THRIVE Service Fair

Each fall the Offices of Undergraduate Student Life and Wellness Education partner with local community partners to connect our students with volunteer-based organizations to host an on-campus service fair. This event helps them learn more about the mission of the agency/organization and creates partnerships for them to be able to volunteer or serve with the invited organizations.

Macys Thanksgiving Day Balloons at Stevens Institute of Technology

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

For 30 years, Stevens' students, staff, faculty and alumni have volunteered to inflate, manage, and fly balloons in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We have over 100 volunteers participate in this annual tradition that is televised around the world.

MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day) is a federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Stevens believes that service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. Stevens community members hear from various speakers discussing the importance of service, Dr. King's legacy, followed by service projects within Hoboken.
