Test Score Exemptions and Waivers

The criteria for test score exemptions and waivers are listed below. Please read this information carefully and if you have any questions or concerns, contact graduate@stevens.edu.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Test Score Exemptions

Applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria are exempt from Stevens’ English Language Proficiency Requirement and therefore do not need to provide evidence of English proficiency as part of their application for admission:

  • Native language is English.

  • Earned or will have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college/university before enrollment at Stevens.

  • Earned or will have earned a master's degree from an accredited U.S. college/university before enrollment at Stevens.

  • Completed or will complete at least two years of full-time graduate study at a U.S. college/university before enrollment at Stevens.

Applicants who meet one or more of the above criteria will have the English Language Proficiency Requirement waived by a staff member after their application has been submitted.

Test Score Waivers

Applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria do not need to provide evidence of English proficiency as part of their application for admission, however, they will be required to complete the Stevens English Communication Proficiency Exam (ECPE) upon arrival to campus. More information about the ECPE can be found on this page. The criteria below must be satisfied before enrollment at Stevens, but not necessarily prior to application.

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from a college/university outside the U.S. that uses English as the language of instruction.

  • Completed two years of full-time graduate study at a college/university outside the U.S. that uses English as the language of instruction.

  • Earned a master's degree from a college/university outside the U.S. that uses English as the language of instruction.

  • Completed the first two years of a bachelor's degree program internationally and completed the final two years of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited U.S. college/university.

Applicants who meet one or more of the above criteria and wish to be considered for a waiver of the English Language Proficiency admission requirement must provide an official document from the institution at which they were enrolled  that states that English was the language of instruction for their program. That documentation should be uploaded  through the applicant status page, using the material name "TOEFL/IELTS Waiver Request." Once we receive your document, a Graduate Admissions Advisor will reach out to discuss next steps.
