Covid test kits are available at the Health Service for students only for a discount of $2 (Duckbills only) Monday-Friday 9am-4pm.

Anyone feeling symptoms of Coronavirus must wear a well-fitting mask and isolate until they have a negative test.

COVID-19 Policy (updated March 4, 2024)

What to Do if You Test Positive for COVID
Positive COVID results must be reported to Student Health Services (students) by emailing studenthealthservices@stevens.edu or Human Resources (employees) by emailing benefits@stevens.edu.

If you test positive, you are expected to self-isolate until you are no longer infectious.  Do not enter Stevens buildings or participate in Stevens-sponsored in-person activities until you meet the criteria for no longer being infectious. The Guidance from the CDC recommends that people with respiratory virus symptoms that are not better explained by another cause stay home and away from others until at least 24 hours after both resolution of fever AND the overall symptoms are improving. This recommendation addresses the period of greatest infectiousness and highest viral load for most people, which is typically in the first few days of illness and when symptoms, including fever, are worst. This is similar to longstanding recommendations for other respiratory illnesses, including influenza. Click on the above link to see when your infectious period ends.

Five additional days of masking reduces harm during later stages of illness and protects people at higher risk of severe illness. After testing positive for COVID, Stevens requires an additional five days of mask-wearing after you are out of the infectious period. 

While Stevens is no longer conducting universal contact tracing, we remain committed to providing COVID-related support for the community. Student Health Services will provide information about notifying your contacts once you report your positive case as well as information on missing class due to COVID.

Information for Residential Students

  • All students must report positive cases by emailing studenthealthservices@stevens.edu. If a student is living in Stevens housing, they must also report the positive case to their RA at the same time.

  • After students report their positive case, information on self-isolation, contact tracing, contacting professors, and dining information will be emailed to the student (if this occurs outside of normal business hours, this will be sent on the next business day).

  • Residential students are permitted to isolate in their room, even if they have a roommate (as the roommate has already been exposed before the student has tested positive). Students are encouraged to isolate at their home if possible and if it doesn’t require public transportation to return home. If a student chooses to isolate in their room and the roommate can go home during that period of time, that is also an option for the roommate as not all students can go home to isolate. 

  • During the infectious period, students may leave their room only to seek medical care, obtain food or pharmaceuticals. Must wear a mask!

  • Student Health Services will email residential students who test positive regarding when to end isolation.

  • Students are not permitted to eat in any campus dining facility until they are out of the infectious period.

  • Students on the meal plan who are isolating can:

  • Mobile order and pick up from a Stevens Dining location. Must wear a mask!

  • Mobile order and request delivery from a Stevens Dining location to their building if available.

  • Mobile order using their Dining Dollars and order food from Grubhub that can be delivered to the building.  Must wear a mask!

COVID Symptoms

People with COVID have had a wide range of symptoms reported, ranging from no symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID:

  • Fever or Chills

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle or body aches

  • Headache

  • New loss of taste or smell

  • Sore throat

  • Congestion or runny nose

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Diarrhea

Seek Medical Care If You Need It

Students can schedule a telehealth appointment at Student Health Services if they test positive for COVID. Students can call 201-216-5678 to speak with a nurse 24/7. Employees who test positive for COVID should contact their healthcare provider. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 3911 on-campus or 911 off-campus.

If You Were Exposed

Wear a high quality and well-fitting mask anytime you are around others, including at home or in your residence hall room, on-campus, and in public.

If you have symptoms, test immediately.

  • If you use an antigen test, a positive result is reliable, but a negative test is not always accurate.

  • If your antigen test is negative, take another antigen test after 48 hours.

What to do if you do not have symptoms but have been exposed to COVID-19.

  • Asymptomatic patients with close contact with someone with SARS-CoV-2 infection should have a series of three viral tests for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Testing is recommended immediately (but not earlier than 24 hours after the exposure) and, if negative, again 48 hours after the first negative test and, if negative, again 48 hours after the second negative test. This will typically be at day 1 (where day of exposure is day 0), day 3, and day 5.
