SEVP Portal

The SEVP Portal is a way for you to directly access your SEVIS Records and update your personal or employer information (Post-Completion OPT only).

Your SEVP Portal information will be emailed to you directly from SEVP on the day that your OPT Work Authorization begins.

Please refer to the FAQs below to learn about the SEVP Portal and how to use it properly.

Reporting Employment: SEVP Portal

The SEVP Portal allows students on OPT to create a Portal account and update the following details in their SEVIS record:

  • Add or edit their phone number

  • Add or edit their mailing and physical address

  • Add or edit employer information (post-completion OPT only, not available on STEM).

Students will get an SEVP Portal email to their Stevens email account on the day OPT begins, not the day OPT is approved. An email will come from do-not-reply.sevp@ice.dhs.gov. If you do not see the email, check your spam or junk mail folder. If you have not received an email, it may be that your SEVIS record still shows your application as pending instead of approved. This is not a problem. In this situation, reach out to isss@stevens.edu by sending your approved EAD card and ISSS will work with SEVIS to get your record updated.

The link for setting up the Portal account expires in 14 days, so make sure you set up your account as soon as you get the email.

If you do not update the SEVP with employment within 10 days of the start date, you will no longer be able to add the information. In this case, you must submit the Employer Update Form to ISSS.

Information in the Portal is sent immediately to SEVIS and your immigration advisor (DSO)  will be able to view the information.

If you have questions regarding the SEVP Portal, please visit  Study in the States for additional information and videos on navigating the Portal.

SEVP Portal Tips for Updating Employment

  • If you change employers and you are adding a new employer, do not delete the previous employer or edit the previous employer and override the information. You will update the end date of the previous employer and add a new employer to report the change in employer.

    • You should only delete an employer if you never worked for the employer.

    • You should only edit previous employment if there is incorrect or missing information for that employment segment.

  • In the 'Relation to Field of Study' field, you need to explain how the job relates to your degree or coursework. Examples can be found below:

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering:

I work full time as an Electrical Engineer at ABC Corp., a government contractor. In my job, I analyze client requirements for electrical systems and provide them with cost estimates of such systems. My work requires understanding of electrical circuit theory, which I studied in-depth at the University of ABC.

    • Bachelor's degree in Business:

I work full time as a Loan Officer at a mortgage company, Happy Homes, where I meet with clients and evaluate, authorize and recommend approval of loan applications. On a daily basis, I use the knowledge I gained in my credit analysis, sales and marketing classes that  took as part of my major program of study.

    • Master's degree in Kinesiology:

I am working 25 hours a week in a health food store as a consultant for Self-Made Inc., designing and teaching exercise classes that are incorporated into a customer's overall nutrition and exercise plan . My designs and customer instruction draw upon my studies and classwork in exercise therapy and physical reconditioning.

    • Master's degree in Music:

I am working at a hospital playing the harp in patient rooms. I also conduct hands-on harp beginner workshops for long-term patients. On average, I work at the hospital 35 hours a week. My duties directly utilize the skills and knowledge I acquired from my coursework and degree in music therapy.

    • PhD in Computer Science:

I am employed as a Computer and Information Research Scientist at ABC Research Institute. I work as part of a team of scientists and engineers that designs experiments to test the operation of various software systems. My work builds on research in complex algorithms and machine learning, which I studied as part of my dissertation.

  • If you are working at a company branch, client location, working from home, or any other location that is different from the employer's main location, you can enter this information in the 'Relation to the Field of Study' field. For example, if you are working at client ABC you can write, "Working at client ABC located at 123 Happy Lane, Hoboken, NJ 07030."
