Work Study
As part of your financial aid package, you might receive Federal Work-Study funding. This type of aid requires you to work a part-time job to help you pay for your college costs. At Stevens, on-campus work-study jobs are coordinated through the Student Employment Office and posted on the Stevens Human Resources website.
How do I Apply for a Federal Work-Study Award?
You are automatically considered for a work-study award when you apply for federal financial aid with the FAFSA. Work-study funding is need-based, so your eligibility is determined by your family’s financial circumstances.
Again, we strongly encourage you to submit your FAFSA as early as possible since work-study funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible students. You can submit your FAFSA form as early as October 1, and the priority deadline for Stevens is February 15 for incoming students and May 15 for returning students. To receive a work-study award, you must also meet the requirements for federal student aid eligibility.
How Do I Claim This Award?
If you receive a Federal Work-Study Program award, you must earn this award money by working in a work-study eligible job. The award amount will not be applied toward your Stevens bill. Stevens will pay you directly for the hours you work, up to your work-study award amount. How you spend your paycheck is your decision: personal expenses, tuition, books — it’s up to you.
What Kinds of Jobs Are Available?
Stevens has several on-campus work-study job openings for undergraduates, and you can often find a position that matches your skills, interests and schedule. You also have the option of finding a work-study eligible job off campus in a community service position in Hoboken and surrounding areas.
In many cases, you can find a work-study job that complements your course of study at Stevens. Most of the job opportunities include assisting faculty or working in one of the labs, academic departments, or administrative offices at Stevens.
How Do I Get a Work-Study Job?
It is your responsibility to find, apply for and secure your work-study position. You must have a Federal Work-Study award and be working in an eligible Federal Work-Study Program position in order to earn your award money. Job listings will say whether the job is eligible for work-study candidates.
To apply for a work-study job at Stevens, you must submit an online application with a cover letter and resume through the Workday @ Stevens jobs site. There may be other requirements listed, depending on the job posting.
How Much Can I Earn?
You’ll be paid by the hour and hourly rates may vary by job opening, but most typically pay $9.00 per hour. You can earn up to the amount of your Federal Work-Study Program award, as stated in your financial aid package. Awards range from $500 to $2,000 per academic year. If you use your allotted award for the year, you can request consideration for additional work-study funding by contacting the Office of Financial Aid.
Your total work-study award depends on your level of financial need as well as when you applied for financial aid, which is why we encourage all students to submit the FAFSA as early as possible. Stevens receives and disburses a limited amount of Federal Work-Study Program funding each year, so awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis.
