The End of Physics?
Department of Physics
Location: Burchard 103
Speaker: John Horgan, Teaching Assistant Professor and Director of the Stevens Center for Science writings, Stevens Institute of Technology
ABSTRACT
In 1981, Stephen Hawking announced that physicists were on the verge of a "theory of everything" that would bring about "the end of theoretical physics." Veteran science journalist John Horgan will reminisce about his investigation of Hawking's remarkable claim, which culminated in Horgan's still-controversial 1996 book "The End of Science." Horgan will also describe his encounters with Hawking, Wheeler, Weinberg and other great physicists of the 20th century.
