A. James Clark Scholars Program

The A. James Clark Scholars Program at Stevens Institute of Technology was made possible thanks to a generous investment by the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation to honor the legacy of the late A. James Clark, a noted engineer, philanthropist and founder of the Maryland-based Clark Construction Group LLC, one of the nation’s leading privately-held construction companies.

A James ClarkThrough dedication and tenacity, Mr. Clark grew a local construction company into a national success, but he never forgot that his business success began with an engineering scholarship. This has guided the Clark family’s longstanding investments in engineering education that continues in his name today.

As part of its commitment to building a pipeline of future engineers, the foundation has partnered with Stevens to provide financial support and enhanced learning opportunities to exceptional undergraduate students who are underrepresented in the engineering field.

About the Clark Scholars Program

Stevens is among an exclusive group of top universities selected by the Clark Foundation to implement the A. James Clark Scholars Program, the foundation’s signature academic initiative, combining engineering, business, leadership and community service. The inaugural cohort of Clark Scholars enrolled at Stevens in fall 2018.

Students selected for the Clark Scholars Program receive the following academic supports:

  • A program director and faculty advisor to facilitate cohort interactions and provide individualized advising and support.

  • A rigorous program of engineering, computer science and cybersecurity study, business and/or finance-focused coursework, and service-based learning programs, leadership development, and other programming.

  • An annual financial aid package, as adjusted for inflation and tuition levels and subject to available funds, will be provided for four years.  Financial aid is based on demonstrated need, with the goal of having limited loan obligations upon graduation.

Additional Opportunities for Clark Scholars at Stevens

In addition to the core curriculum of the Clark Scholars Program, Clark Scholars at Stevens receive supplemental opportunities that maximize Stevens’ legacy in entrepreneurial and technology-driven research and education, as well as the university's incomparable proximity to New York City's cultural attractions.

To expand their intellectual, cultural and social horizons, Clark Scholars are provided with:

  • An annual $5,000 stipend to support participation in undergraduate summer research under the guidance of a faculty member, or an eligible international experience, such as study abroad, service, or research abroad programs that take place in summer or winter sessions.

  • An annual cultural passport granting access to exciting events like plays, musicals, sports, museum trips, walking food tours and painting classes, offering unique experiences in the vibrant New York City area. It also provides opportunities to connect with fellow scholars.

  • The opportunity to join small, discussion-based seminars during your first three semesters on topics including leadership, ethics, community service and business.

  • The option to live together as a cohort during freshman year, and the opportunity to live on campus in the Clark living-learning community beginning in sophomore year.

  • The option to participate in the Accelerated Master's Program, which provides the opportunity to complete a bachelor's and master's degree sequentially.
