Center for Complex Systems & Enterprises

Research with real-world application is at the core of the Center for Complex Systems & Enterprises’ (CCSE’s) interdisciplinary study of complex enterprise systems. 


Founded in 2012, CCSE engages industry, government and academia to confront complex enterprise problems and engineer a better future with an enhanced quality of life. The emergent research addresses inter and transdisciplinary issues through evidence-based, unbiased, improved decision-making across four key domains: aerospace & defense, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning applications, healthcare and transportation & logistics. CCSE develops computational models and prototypes of complex enterprises to enable business leaders and policymakers to evaluate how their potential decisions will affect stakeholders, identify unbeneficial moves, examine alternatives and translate data into impactful next steps. CCSE drives the rapid conceptualization, development and validation of multi-level computational models that make improvements to these complex systems possible. 

Data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence and systems engineering are embedded throughout the research, fostering superior policies, system designs and integrated learning for a more intelligent and responsive future. A vital component of the center is driving rapid conceptualization, development, and validation of multi-level computational models that enables stakeholders to translate data into impactful next steps. 

The large-scale systems and critical infrastructures that society depends on are increasingly gaining complexity with expanding levels of networked activity. Understanding and improving these systems requires an approach that cuts across the engineering and physical sciences, incorporating economics, finance, management, behavior and social sciences. The goal of  CCSE is to enable insight and value gained from interactively exploring real and computationally imagined complex systems from an inter- and transdisciplinary holistic approach. Thus, the center not only creates methods, practices and tools, but also leverages and incorporates existing approaches and solutions. 

Since early 2021, the Center is directed by Dr. Carlo Lipizzi (, whose research focus is on Natural Language Processing, Data Science, AI/Machine Learning.

How We Do it and Who We Do it With

 At CCSE, our research includes human-centered concepts, principles, models, methods, tools and data to support the understanding that can catalyze fundamental change in complex systems and enterprises. The complexity of those systems requires the availability of hardware resources for processing and visualization. We use a combination of local resources in our "Immersion Lab" and cloud processing. In partnership with key industry leaders, we aim to inform and advance evidence-based decision making in complex systems and enterprises via computational modeling, data analytics and interactive visualizations.


CCSE's research addresses complex real-world issues with the aim of enabling better decision-making and developing trustworthy systems for a progressing, evolving future. Our research portfolio, embedded in data-driven techniques, spans thematic areas that are either intrinsically complex and/or provide the conceptual elements to address complexity. Research is based on real-world needs across our primary areas of interest: artificial intelligence/machine learning, aerospace & defense, healthcare and transportation & logistics.
